Teaching philosophy
In order to best serve my students, I must constantly reflect upon my teaching in an attempt to improve.
The most rewarding aspect of teaching
The relationship built with students. It is always exciting to reflect upon how students have grown and changed. Often, upon watching the ways they have changed and discovering the knowledge they have gained, I feel like a proud parent. I enjoy working with students and appreciate the time and effort they put into their studies. Being able to help students better themselves is a great feeling.
Technique or strategy to recommend
Get to know your students. Being able to relate to students in simple ways—such as using examples that include their interests—builds your credibility as a teacher.
Best compliment from a student
One told me they learned more in my class than any other class. I liked this compliment because it was given by means of the student’s own improvement. As a teacher, I am successful when my students are learning, so a compliment that indicates learning allows me to regard my teaching as successful.
Biggest influence on my teaching career
The person who has been the most influential in my teaching career is my undergraduate academic advisor Doug Jennings. Doug always pushed me to do my best in all realms of my life. He always made sure I knew what I was capable of. Doug has a great passion for education, and that passion had an impact on me. Doug has served as a role model as well as a mentor in my teaching career.
