Teaching philosophy
To “coach” my students to be active “players” in their learning, both in and out of the classroom.
Three most valuable approaches that I bring to my teaching practice
- I love using experiential projects in the classroom. This experience helps the students when they transition to their careers.
- Real-life examples are an important tool that I use in every class. Students need to see current examples of how this strategy is being applied in today’s world.
- Positive energy and enthusiasm is a vital component to my teaching practice. I try to keep the classroom environment exciting and constantly changing, so the students remain engaged.
Most challenging aspect of teaching
The most challenging aspect of teaching for me is getting students to think beyond the confines of the semester. Many students are focused on “getting the grade” to get the degree and (hopefully) a job. I want to plant seeds in the hearts of my students for a lifetime of learning, not just within a given semester. I use experiential projects and guest speakers to help students see beyond the semester.
What students think makes me an effective teacher
I think they would say that I am enthusiastic about the material and that I care about them.
Teaching technique to recommend
Constantly mix up the teaching method multiple times throughout a class period. Students today live in an ever-changing, fast-paced world. Good or bad, the classroom needs to do the same to keep students engaged.
Best compliment I’ve received from a student
Anytime a student expresses gratitude for what they learned in my classroom.
