Teaching philosophy
The focus of my teaching philosophy relies on setting high expectations for my students; while I am rigorous and hold my students to a high standard, I provide a caring and encouraging atmosphere while teaching by fostering enthusiasm for learning, modeling best teaching practices, and providing instruction in multiple ways.
Three most valuable approaches that I bring to my teaching practice
- Model appropriate teaching practices based on research findings and provide real life examples based upon my teaching experiences
- Present the information in multiple ways that are fun but purposeful
- Provide clear instructional guidelines, with continuous support, and meaningful feedback.
The most rewarding aspect of teaching
Hearing positive feedback from students after graduation. It's incredibly gratifying to hear from students that are using class concepts in their careers.
The resource or person that has been the most important influence in my teaching career
My husband and my parents. They have always supported me and cheered me on during good and bad days. I also think my colleagues are a great resource, I feel privileged to work in a department where all ideas are respected, heard, and acknowledged and where we laugh and have fun teaching.
The most challenging aspect of teaching
Getting students to think beyond the confines of the semester. Too frequently, students are focused on “getting the grade” to get the degree and (hopefully) a job. I want to plant seeds in the hearts of my students for a lifetime of learning, not just within a given semester. I use experiential projects and guest speakers to help students see beyond the semester.
