Illinois State University’s New Faculty Orientation is designed to acquaint new faculty members with the campus’ mission of creating an equitable and inclusive learning environment where both faculty and students are successful. The welcome event takes place in the morning at the Bone Student Center. A special reception for the new faculty members and a guest will be held later that evening. Registration is required.

The morning will begin with a welcome from Acting Provost Ani Yazedjian. Staff from the Center for Integrated Professional Development will facilitate an introduction to teaching at Illinois State, sharing resources to help you get started with the semester. This will be followed by an introduction to research at Illinois State, facilitated by Dr. Craig MacLauchlan, associate vice president for research and graduate studies. The morning session concludes with roundtable discussions centered on each participant’s college.

The Welcome Fair is the venue for providing new faculty with information about campus units and services. Visit with representatives from these groups and learn what these units or organizations provide to support you as new members of the Illinois State community. On the day, you’ll receive a map of tables, and you may visit as many which interest you. If you visit 10 tables and complete the “Passport to ISU” card, drop your card off as you are leaving to be entered to win prizes of ISU merchandise and teaching resources.

New faculty and a guest are invited to a special reception hosted by Interim President Aondover Tarhule.
It will be held at the University Residence, 1000 Gregory Street, Normal, adjacent to the ISU Golf Course.
These self-paced lessons showcase important aspects of Illinois State University's shared vision and culture. This content is intended to complement the synchronous components of NFO that we will be offering in August.
The first two modules introduce you to Illinois State’s Strategic Plan, Educate – Connect – Elevate and give you insight about the University's student population. The other three modules use an integrated teacher/person/scholar model for professional development. You will also find other information about resources for students, research support, and help with special teaching challenges.
Online orientation will be available in mid-July. New faculty members will receive notification through their campus email.

Inclusive learning and teaching refer to the ways in which pedagogy, curricula, and assessment are designed and delivered to engage students in learning that is meaningful, relevant, and accessible to all. In this session, we will hear from a panel of students and discuss how we can integrate practices into our teaching so that students can feel a sense of belonging and success. We will also discuss the “equity-minded syllabus” and consider how this classroom tool can be used to, welcome students to the course, demystify the course experience, and validate their ability to succeed. LGBTQIA2S+ youth, including college students, are among the most at-risk groups for mental health challenges, housing and food insecurity, and domestic violence, because of the ways in which society’s support systems fail to see and value them. Formerly referred to as Safe Zone, Queer Allyship is a knowledge-level workshop focusing on using terminology appropriately, understanding the relationship between sex, gender, and sexuality, and finding the resources available to support Queer Redbirds (faculty, staff, and students) at Illinois State University. This event, hosted by the Center for Integrated Professional Development, is designed to help you learn the ins and outs of university-specific technologies. The orientation will cover various technology-related topics, including My Illinois State, ULID activation, the learning management system, Canvas, and information about personal server space. Bring your questions and your 9-digit University ID number or Redbird card to the session to allow for full participation. Registration is required.
The information in these modules is designed to be a supplement to the synchronous orientation events in August. If you have already activated your ULID, use the Illinois State login, which will allow you to pause and come back to any of the modules. If you do not yet have your ULID, you will be able to enter the module as a guest, but this will not save your progress.
