Stipend Policy

(updated 04/08/2026)

The Center for Integrated Professional Development provides learning and growth opportunities for employees of Illinois State University, particularly those in Academic Affairs with teaching responsibilities or otherwise support student success. In addition, the Center offers modest stipends to eligible participants for completing some workshops. Amounts vary based on the time committed and the work completed for the particular workshop. The event description will indicate who is eligible to participate and if a stipend is available. Stipends are awarded to those who attend and participate in all aspects of the workshop and after final projects are submitted.

In addition, for the annual Summer Institute:

  • Individuals may receive stipends for up to five (5) workshops across Summer Institute offerings.
  • During Summer Institute, individuals can participate in one (1) course design cohort experience. In 2026, the cohorts offered include, (Re)invent Your Course for Civic Engagement and Sustainability, Reinvent Your Course for Student Success, Design a  Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Study, Design your Course for Early Career, or (Re)Design your Online Course for Accessibility and Alignment .

Pay Schedule

Stipends will be issued as Additional Academic payments. Unless noted otherwise, stipends are usually paid in the month following the date of the final project submission. In addition, individuals who don’t have a summer appointment (e.g., new NTTs ) may not be paid until their appointment begins in August. Please see below for additional stipend information for graduate students and staff on a 12-month appointment. Stipends for a few workshops are administered by other campus units. For those workshops, please check with the facilitator or the unit for information on stipends and payment.

Eligibility

The University requires employees to be physically in the State of Illinois when completing the course, even if the course is offered online.

Tenured and Non-Tenured Faculty

Stipends are available to tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure track faculty. Individuals whose first appointment at ISU will begin after the workshop must have signed offer letter accepting the appointment AND completed an I-9 with HR prior to starting the workshop.

Staff Employees with Teaching Responsibilities

Civil Service and A/P employees may not receive stipends for workshops attended during their paid working hours but may be eligible if they use their paid time off. Civil Service and A/P employees are responsible for working with their supervisors to ensure that they are not violating any additional pay or attendance policies.

 Graduate Students/Graduate Student Employees

Graduate student employees, including those who are the instructor of record, must have stipends pre-approved. Stipends for graduate students and graduate student employees must be considered on an individual basis, due to factors including assistantship type, international visa limitations, appointment types, and contract dates.

All graduate student employees are still welcome to participate in Center for Integrated Professional Development workshops for which they are eligible, but additional payments will only be received if the individual’s visa status, appointment type, and contract dates allow them to be paid and they have been pre-approved. Depending on the timing of the workshop, graduate students must have either active summer employment at the University during the dates of the workshop they are attending or a fall GA appointment to receive a stipend. Graduate students without student-worker or graduate-assistant appointments are not eligible to receive stipends for workshops.

To begin the pre-approval process, register for an event that says graduate students are eligible to attend, and someone from CIPD will contact you about the process.
