Welcome to ISU

Staff from the Center for Integrated Professional Development will facilitate an introduction to teaching at Illinois State, sharing resources and introducing you to people who can help you get started with the semester. The welcome event concludes with lunch with Deans and the Provost Office Staff.

Milner Library New Faculty Orientation

This session will focus on how Milner Library supports teaching and research. 
Specifically, you will learn about:

  • Placing items on course reserve
  • Options to support textbook affordability
  • Supporting student research with Milner resources
  • Working with and meeting library faculty assigned to your school or department
  • Funding for book purchases
  • Resources available for your scholarship and creative productivity

Canvas Quick Start and Accessibility Primer

This workshop introduces the essential features of Canvas, including key settings, content creation with Pages and Modules, communication tools, Assignments, and the Gradebook. The second part of the workshop will provide you with information regarding accessibility guidelines and processes to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 AA compliance for the upcoming April 2027 target date. Topics covered include accessibility, approaching Canvas with accessibility in mind, and identifying media and document accessibility compliance opportunities. Practical methods, useful tools, and other resources for accessibility will be covered during this session.
By the end of this session, you'll have the foundation and resources to begin confidently building your courses.

Getting Started with Research at ISU

This interactive workshop will be led by Dr. Kristian O’Connor, Associate Vice President for Research, and Jason Wagoner, Senior Director of Research and Sponsored Programs. Participants will discuss what makes a successful researcher, have the opportunity to ask questions or share their concerns regarding research at Illinois State, and be introduced to resources available at the University.  
Some of these resources involve assistance in areas including:

  • Planning and conducting research
  • Research areas including scholarship of teaching and learning, human subjects, and animal research
  • Writing support and accountability resources
  • Assistance in identifying, pursuing, and managing funding (internal and external)

Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Student Success

Inclusive learning and teaching refer to the ways in which pedagogy, curricula, and assessment are designed and delivered to engage students in learning that is meaningful, relevant, and accessible to all. In this session, we will hear from a panel of students and discuss how we can integrate practices into our teaching so that students can feel a sense of belonging and success.

The Framework for Inclusive Teaching Excellence (FITE) guides CIPD’s approach to advancing inclusive teaching at Illinois State University. Designed to support instructors at all career stages, the FITE promotes growth in six dimensions: Science of Learning, Impact of Course Design, Evidence-based Pedagogy, Classroom Climate and Culture, Feedback and Assessment Loop, and Data-Informed Reflection.
