Community Partner Lunch and Learn

Are you interested in incorporating civic engagement or service learning into your courses? This session can get you connected with some community partners. Join us for lunch and meet representatives from local agencies who would like to collaborate with Illinois State instructors and students. At this event, community partners will give a brief overview of their programs, services, and needs, and then faculty will have the opportunity to talk with them and discuss possibilities. Registration is required.

Effective Practices for Peer Feedback on Teaching

Peer observation, Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SIGD), and analysis of course artifacts can be valuable processes for gathering feedback on teaching practices. When used in a formative manner, data gathered from these processes can encourage scholarly teaching and has the potential to transform teaching and learning (Barbeau & Happel, 2023). This workshop is intended for faculty and course instructors interested in developing their teaching through formative peer feedback, as well as for those in mentoring roles. In this session, we will examine the role these practices play in professional growth, identify effective practices, and provide strategies for giving formative feedback. Registration is required.

Partnering for Student Success: Insights from the Dean of Students and Inclusive Teaching Strategies

This full-day workshop brings together institutional insight and instructional practice to better understand the challenges students may encounter during their time at Illinois State. In the morning session, colleagues from the Dean of Students Office will share insights into several common challenges students face and how these experiences can affect academic engagement and persistence. The afternoon session focuses on translating these insights into practical, evidence-informed instructional strategies. Participants will explore approaches to course design, communication, flexibility, and feedback that foster more welcoming and effective learning environments across disciplines while maintaining academic standards and clear expectations. By the end of the day, instructors will leave with a stronger understanding of student experiences and concrete strategies they can apply in their own courses to enhance student learning and persistence. Registration is required.

Teaching Civic Skills through Deliberative Dialogues

“Dialogue and Deliberation are innovative processes that help people come together across differences to tackle our most challenging problems” (National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation). Incorporating these processes into the curriculum of college courses gives students opportunities to develop skills to productively engage with society's challenging problems in authentic ways

In this workshop, course instructors will learn about deliberative pedagogies and how to use them to teach civic kills such as investigating social issues, exploring perspectives, and gaining a deeper understanding of complex problems. Participants will start by learning about the theoretical foundations of deliberative pedagogies and then participate in a Deliberative Dialogue. They will also identify complex problems related to the courses they teach and plan how to incorporate Deliberative Dialogues into those learning experiences. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be trained as Deliberative Dialogue facilitators and can support other dialogue experiences coordinated by the Center for Civic Engagement if they choose to do so. Registration is required.

Framework for Inclusive Teaching Excellence (FITE)

The Framework for Inclusive Teaching Excellence (FITE) guides CIPD’s approach to advancing inclusive teaching at Illinois State University. Designed to support instructors at all career stages, the FITE promotes growth in six dimensions: Science of Learning, Impact of Course Design, Evidence-based Pedagogy, Classroom Climate and Culture, Feedback and Assessment Loop, and Data-Informed Reflection. CIPD has built a robust suite of programming and services around this framework, offering a dynamic lineup of events and learning opportunities to meet the evolving needs of educators across the university.
